To be successful, multinational companies need to manage their global workforce in ways that fit and develop their strategic capabilities. In this paper, we identify those capabilities and examine how their development involves managing not only the global mobility of people (e.g. expatriates, inpatriates, third country nationals), but also the global mobility of jobs (e.g. offshoring) and knowledge (e.g. transnational teams). The paper discusses the options and challenges multinational enterprises address in each type of global mobility.
