The first primer socially responsible fund appeared in Spain in 1997. But it was not until the end of 1999 when a major number of these types of funds were created in Spain, and the socially responsible investment sector grew notably. Even so, over the last few years, in Spain these types of socially responsible investments have not grown as significantly as in other European countries, despite the fact that in recent years a major number of socially responsible funds managed and located outside Spain have been marketed, which could be interpreted as Spain being seen as a good opportunity. In this regard, the article offers a systematic overview of the evolution of this type of Spanish funds in the period 1999-2002, as well as an analysis of the methodology for the pre-selection of portfolios, and of the participation of social interest organisations in the structure and development of the funds. It also gives some food for thought on the poor degree of regulation in Spain related to this type of products. The article, Socially Responsible Investments in .Spain, by the University professors Lozano, Albareda and Balaguer, is, in a few words, the findings of a line of research that aims to inform and promote thought and analysis on socially responsible funds, linked directly to ethical and social values and to the social responsibility of companies, such as economic agents, and of individuals, as investors.
